Mel Green: Gig Calendar

May 24, 2018 The Armory Cafe Somerville Mass USA

My friend, band-mate and bass player on my CD, Eric Luskin said: "My friend Mel Green delivered a confident, relaxed set at Somerville Armory. Well played, sir!"

My take: It isn't often that an opportunity to present an hour-long show comes my way, and so I made the most of it by arranging my songs by theme, which, in my humble opinion, made for a set that flowed rather well.

I'm also very happy that friends turned out to make it very comfortable for me as well... thank you all.

And a big thank you to the organizer of the Loop, John Mark, for making this possible!

Apr 12, 2018 TJs Music CLub Emmarentia, Johannesburg Gauteng Rep of South Africa

Back in Johannesburg again after 24 years in the States... this welcome gig turned out very well.
There were 4 other acts, each had a 25 minute slot. I was invited to join in with a quartet led by Rael Birns, who instigated this whole thing for me, which helped me warm up on stage.
I went on at 9:15pm and sang and played for about 55 minutes (lucky me).
The audience was attentive and appreciative. Friends attended. I did well. Sang and played well, and received many compliments after this unusual show.

A terrific opportunity. My sincere thanks and appreciation go out to the sound crew, Ken Bain and all of you who attended!

Mar 26, 2018 Beacon Isle Resort Plettenberg Bay Cape Rep. of South Africa
Mar 21, 2018 The Barleycorn Music Club Claremont pe Provi Rep of South Africa

A great day for a really cool event! It was a public holiday on this very nice day in Claremont, a suburb of Cape Town.;15
I went on closer to 3pm than the 3pm time slot I was expecting. [You wouldn't mind either if Steve Fataar of the famous Flames opened the show, followed by Steve Newman and his drummer!] Super musos!

My little 4 song slot went well. I felt really good about it. The audience listened. A few friends turned up in my honour. I sang OK. What more could anyone want?

Oct 31, 2017 2017 Pepperell Fall Fair Pepperell MA USA
Feb 26, 2017 The PCA Westford Massachusetts
Oct 5, 2016 Main Streets Cafe Concord Massachusetts USA

A vey enjoyable gig this was!

WE all... Mel Green, Phil & Trish Knudsen, Amy Lohman & Brad Meyer (Sweetbrier), performed 6 sets of about 20 minutes each, occasionally stepping in with each other to add harmony on various songs. We got a lot of compliments from the small'ish Wednesday evening diners and our friends who kindly turned out for us, a few remaining till closing time!

I hope we are asked back sometime...

Mar 27, 2016 StudioSessions Live on Radio Plymouth Massachusetts

Last March 27th I drove down to the Plymouth Moose Lodge, the venue for a recorded interview with Dave Palmater on Song Sessions, a program conceived by Bob Crownfield.

Many of you know Dave Palmater from his DJ stints on WUMB-FM, so for me it was an honor and a pleasure to have him listen me to sing my 6-song set, interspersing them with comments and questions about this and that.

To say that it was a bit nerve wracking would be an understatement, but all told it turned out OK. (One always feels one could've done better, but then those of you who know me well know that I ain't much of a talker, especially when the subject is me.

I hear that the program will be syndicated all over the country, and perhaps even further afield. We shall see then how it turned out, post editing!

Thanks Dave! Thanks Bob!

Feb 14, 2016 Westford PCA Valentines Day Gig Westford Massachusetts USA

A hardy bunch of about 35 open micers and hangers-on made it to the PCA last night, which is a little old chapel with a very high ceiling (all wood painted a cheery bright white, a nice full width stage, with a grand piano and an organizer and his helpers who have embraced technology, to the extent that they handled the PA "board" from a tablet! The sound reinforcement was really good!
My 30 minute set included:
"Reason to believe" Tim Hardin
"Until it's time for you to go" Buffy St. Marie
"I'm thinking about your eyes" Mel Green & George Pultz
"My Funny Valentine" Rogers & Hart
"All this time" Mel Green
"Till there was you" Meredith Wilson
"If I Fell" Lennon & McCartney
Encore: "True Love" Cole Porter (from the movie High Society)
The audience seemed to enjoy my choice of songs, and I got a very nice response, so I am happy.

Sep 20, 2015 Rockport Peace Fest Rockport Massachusetts
Sep 21, 2014 Guiseppe's Ristorante Gloucester Massachusetts
Apr 4, 2014 Guiseppe's Gloucester Massachusetts USA

The gig was comfortable, the sound system just right (thanks to Brad and the owner's adept help), and the tunes we performed solo or in duos and trios were just right. Sold a few CDs, got some nice compliments, plus a share of the hat to get me home. Nice.

Dec 21, 2013 Gigging with friends Greater Boston Massachusetts
Apr 5, 2013 Jam 'n Java Arlington Massachusetts

I enjoyed a very pleasant Open Mic Feature at this Arlington coffee shop, which was attended by a respectably sized open-mic crowd and friends who came out especially to see what I've been up to. I was joined on a few songs by my good friends, singers Amy Lohman and Liz Buchanan, who helped make everything look more attractive and the music more varied.
I've been trying out a few covers recently which helped because I haven't been singing any new compositions of my own for a while. Gracious host, Mark Sandman makes this venue very pleasant and attracts varied open-mic performers... it was a pleasure to perform there!

Nov 27, 2012 Nourish Restaurant Lexington Massachusetts USA

A night of enjoyable Open Mic Features... began with Amy Lohman's Mini-set, with Brad Meyer and Mel backing up Amy on vocals and guitars on one of her songs, followed by an entertaining set of original blues based songs by friend Craig Sonnenfeld. Mel Green's feature was next: a set of favorite covers and his own originals, applauded by an appreciative audience of mostly open-mikes. Stalwart open-mic host Ellen Schmidt, supported by Ira Grollman on the soundboard, as usual did a nice job of making us all welcome and at ease in this restaurant setting.

Aug 25, 2012 Nourish Restaurant Lexington Massachusetts USA

A Saturday night at the end of Summer... which translates into a quiet night playing music in a very nice little suburban restaurant... alternating short sets with my musician friends Eric Luskin, who accompanied on bass, and he and I sang on a few we share writing credits playing masterful guitar... Liz Gordon & Gordon McFarland played next presenting a host of their own compositions and a few covers (Very nicely received!)  Kenny Selcer, the man who pops up everywhere on the Boston scene. played and sang a set of his own compositions and played his own style of masterfully picked guitar.  It was a quiet night sure, yet the attentive folks who stayed to listen were most appreciated. I really enjoyed this gig!

Dec 22, 2011 WICN Annual Folk Revival Holiday Show Worcester Massachusetts

A great time was had in this wonderful studio performance space, with supporters of the station in the audience, mingling with performers waiting to go on, and watching each other. Nick Noble was his affable self as usual, interviewing each of the live performers. Featuring: Mary Casiello, Dale Lepage, Doug Kwartler, Dan Cloutier, Kim Jennings, Jane Fallon and your's truly, Mel Green.   This was the fourth time for me, having been invited three prior years with my (presently dormant) group, The Maple Street Project. And I'd  do it again, Nick has just to ask! Thanks Nick!

Dec 6, 2011 Nourish Restaurant Lexington Massachusetts

Ellen Schmidt has a great knack for hosting Open Mics at various  Greater Boston venues... Nourish Restaurant in Lexington, MA. is one very pleasant space to perform. My Mini Set was shared with the fantastic Amy Lohman, a good friend and wonderful singer-songwriter. Our three song set was a profound pleasure for me, and I hope we get to do more as a duo again soon.

Oct 21, 2011 The Coffee Loft Marlborough Massachusetts USA

One of the nicest coffee shops I've ever played at, The Coffee Loft is a cozy space that doubles as an art gallery (with additional gallery spaces one can amble through comfortably to view a variety of art evidently produced right there in rented studio space.) The coffee shop has an ambience that is well lit, facilities that are unobtrusive, and a performance space with acoustics that help the audience focus on the performers. The owners and the organizer go out of their way to make one welcome and help one set up quickly and efficiently...most welcome indeed.

The evening gig was shared with my good friend and outstanding singer-songwriter talent, Amy Lohman who drove to Marlborough all the way from Rockport! Our individual set list featured a mixture of lead vocal with harmony, mostly backed by our two acoustic guitars and occasionally with Amy playing electronic piano. Interspersed with solo songs by each of us, the hour-long set flew and was very well received by the appreciative, attentive and polite audience... unusual in a coffee shop with unobtrusive counter service going on in the background.

While the audience was small the gig was a total pleasure. I hope to do it again there soon!

Jun 29, 2011 NewBridge on the Charles Senior Living Community Dedham
May 14, 2011 Somerville Songwriter Sessions Somerville Massachusetts

The attendance was modest, the cafe is small and is a great little space for intimate events like this... 4 individuals accompanying themselves in 30 minute sets. The Armory has ample parking and I would love to play there again. Being in the company of Michael Troy (who alone, should have drawn a larger crowd), and Perry Desmond-Davies and Chuck Williams, made this a most interesting night of varied approaches to songwriting and their performance styles. The organizer, John Fuzek has got something great going here!

There will be monthly singer-songwriter shows at the Armory in Somerville... try 'em, you'll like them a lot!

Jan 9, 2011 PCA Parish Center for the Arts Westford Massachusetts
Dec 19, 2010 Our Finest Gifts Holiday Concert Norwood Massachusetts
Dec 16, 2010 Mel Green AND The Maple Street Project Worcester Massachusetts
Dec 9, 2010 "Our Finest Gifts" Concert Cambridge Massachusetts
Dec 5, 2010 Amazing Things Arts Center Framingham Massachusetts US
Dec 4, 2010 NewBridge on the Charles Senior Living Community Massachusetts

A unique setting in a very warm sounding auditorium, minimally amplified a set lasting about 50 minutes, sprinkled with 50% original songs, and the other half comprising covers that addressed Chanukah, (My friend Eric Luskin's "Chanukah All Over The World") and a few oldies, ("Bei Mier Bist Du Schoen", "Erev Shel Shoshanim", Sentimental Journey", "Side by Side" and "Donna Donna") made for a very enjoyable performance, during which the audience of retirees were engaged: smiling, paying attention and singing along! I enjoyed the gig very much, as did Paul Lee, who played piano/keyboard, ukulele and bass guitar, and Hector Hambides who alternated between tenor, soprano saxes and flute, and congas. I hope we get to do this again!

Nov 15, 2010 Emerson Umbrella Open Mic Feature Concord Massachusetts
Oct 25, 2010 TCAN Natick Center for the Arts Open Mic Feature Natick Massachusetts
Sep 13, 2010 Lincoln Library Open Mic Feature Lincoln Massachusetts

The "maiden voyage" of the expanded band was all smooth sailing... the band did a fine job in backing Mel up, providing a varied instrumental palette, that helped to give the set variety and thus keep the audience interested and attentive. Thanks to all involved, Brad Meyer the intrepid sound man working under trying circumstances: proving what a fine set of ears he has; Nancy Abrams for providing snacks and drinks, and to Rich Eilbert for being such a fine host and organizer.
